Set Up Git On Ubuntu 14.04

Introduction

An indispensable tool in modern software development is version control system. Version control systems allow you to keep track of your software at the source level. You can track changes, revert to previous stages, and branch to create alternate versions of files and directories.

One of the most popular version control system is Git. Git is very powerful, useful and flexible  to manage and develop your source code. In this article, I will show how to install and configure Git on Ubuntu 14.04

Setup

In ubuntu 14.04, you can very easy to install Git. You can use APT to install it.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install git

That command will download and install Git to your system. The next, you need to configure for Git.

Configuration

Now, you have Git installed and you need to do a few things. The easiest way of doing is use “git config” command. You are also directly edit in .gitconfig file. You need to provide your name and email address because git embeds this information into each commit we do.

git config --global user.name "Your Name"
git config --global user.email "[email protected]"

Or, directly edit in .gitconfig file:

vim ~/.gitconfig

[user]
name = Your Name
email = [email protected]

You can see all of the configuration by typing:

git config --list

Now, git is ready to use your system. In the next guide, I will show how to setup and clone a repository with Git.
